Ribble and Planet X and Focus all do well spec'd bikes for this price but I'd say go second hand, that sort of money will get you a huge amount of carbon loveliness with Ultegra or DA that has usually been well loved, only dry ridden and regularly serviced.

In terms of a bike for both, it is doable but a bit of a compromise. Still cheaper than two bikes though! If you are fairly flexible then I'd go for a bike with a short headtube and thus a slightly more aggressive riding position so that when you fit clip on tri bars you can get lower and more aero. Then if you want a more upright riding position for sportives you can pop a few spacers (but not too many) under your stem to bring you more upright.

Obviously I don't know your size but a quick search brought up these>

Plenty there to think about and I'm sure more advise will follow

How tall are you and what is your inside leg measurement?

I'm not a fit specialist so please don't quote me but for reference, I am 5'11" with inner leg of around 32" and I ride a 56cm bike. This usually relates to the length of the seat tube and I think the more important measurement is that of the top tube as you can move the saddle up and down considerably but are much for limited if you are hunched or stretched due to a huge or tiny top tube. Your best bet would be to go to a shop and try a few bikes for size. Also do a few searches for road bike sizing to get a rough Idea of the right size for you and then if you find a bike you like, check the manufacturers site for size recommendations.

Also have a look at http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CC ... ATOR_INTRO that'll give you a good idea of where to start.
