Wheel advice?
I have two bikes, my pride and joy is a Condor Squadra which has a Mavic Aksium wheelset, which is driving me nuts.
I've tried to put up with the constant creaking and funny noises that comes from the front wheel when climbing out of the saddle. It has sent me insane thinking the wheel was 'flexing' and making my sensor touch the magnet. However, a couple of weeks ago after climbing White Hill in Kent, i noticed the same noise coming from the rear as i ground my way up the steep incline.
This was the final straw and after a tightening everything I removed the speedo completely and realised the noise (at the front) was coming from the wheel itself.
As a result I swapped my Fulcrum 5 front wheel from my Decathlon everyday bike and was instantly much happier. No annoying noise at all. The bike even feels more planted and more responsive.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on with the Mavic's?
I'd swap the wheels over completely except the Condor sports 105, whilst the B'twin has Mirage.
I'm guessing if I can't do anything to cure the problem my options are either buy another Fulcrum wheelset set up for shimano or have the freehub changed on mine.
Help!

Well i've not noticed any other threads complaining of noisy Aksiums and mine are certainly quiet. Are yours high mileage ?
Maybe you need to inspect the bearings (replaceable cartridge type).
Or check spoke tension or lube the nipples in the rims or lube the rear spokes where they cross :?He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
Thanks for your help.
The noise is a sort of clicking. Just as if it's knocking against something only in the case o the front wheel there isn't anything other than the sensor to touch.
They are a couple of years old, so could be well overdue servicing. I'll try lubricating the nipples, the spokes appear tight but should try lobbing it into the LBS and get them to check.
Re the bearings are they replaceable on Aksiums?0 -
I had this with my Planet X R50's, it was weird and I too thought it was something nocking against the spokes. I tightened up the spokes and then gave it a ride and it was better (I think it was the spokes moving against eachother) THEN I decided to try and turn the wheel the other way round, so I took it out spun it round and from then on its been perfect! and feels faster!?
Pretty Crazy but worth a try!0 -
FWIW over-tightening Mavic QRs is a commom cause of creaking - trying swapping the front wheel QR with another type to see is noise disappears?Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
