Different derailleurs needed?

I am currently riding an old peugeot road bike with simplex mechs and downtube shifters. A guy at work has supplied me a pair of shimano rsx shifters for it as they were just sitting around in his shed, and I assume that I would need to fit different mechs so that the gears shift properly.
Can anyone tell me for sure if my assumption is correct, and if so what would be the minimum standard of mech I need to get?

What type of mount is on the rear mech? I only ask because my existing one has the older style plate which effectively just sits around the axle and is held in position on the frame with a dinky 7mm hex bolt.

Unforetunately that is unlikely to fit my frame but thank you anyway.

You'll need a gear hanger adaptor otherwise you'll not be able to fit a mech - the plate-style mounting you mention was only used on basic model frames. You can then use any 7 or 8 speed shimano rear mech.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Thanks for the help. Have now found the hanger online and will be rooting through my spares, I think I had a spare mech somewhere.....

You shouldn't need a new rear mech (although it might shift better). Indexing is in the shifters.
