I'm a keen mountain biker and are thinking about getting a road bike. Mean as it will be my first one I don't want to spend much, so less than £500, ideally cheaper. I appreciate I won't be able to get a brilliant bike for that money, but I don't know if I will take to it so I can always upgrade at a later date. I'd also like a bike with a fairly comfortable riding position so I can ride all day without it getting too painful. What would you recommend?

The best value entry-level road bike around a the moment is the £299 B-Twin Triban 3 from Decathlon. It has decent components and a carbon fork. You'd probably pay £500 for a simiarly spec'd bike elsewhere. http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/triban-3-173178017/
  • I've been waiting ages for stock of the Btwin to come in so I can at least go and see one. Plus, their stores are a bit thin on the ground. A 60+ mile round trip is not my idea of fun!

I've semi-given up on Decathlon and started looking at older models on Ebay. There are quite a few in your (our) price range. A silver allez just went for £380.

The end of line halfords Carrera models: Vanquish, virtuoso and TDF might be worth a look.

Have a look at the Allez, they are currently doing a get fit promotion. I just bought a 2011 triple model for £500 from Leisure Lake Bikes.
