Rusty pedals - prevention / cure ideas?

So I ought to have posted this in the workshop, but it seems no-one ever looks there...

I have a pair on Shimano M540's - the right hand pedal has developed a rust problem, on the surface and on the springs within. Nothing around the cranks thankfully.

Any ideas on how best to clean, and how to prevent in future?

thanks!

A regular squirt of WD40/GT85? Works on mine despite what a winter of MTBing will do to components.

I had that happen to my 520's. They had pitted rust on them so I took it off with some wet and dry, then just made an effort to squirt with GT85 every now and then. At 20 quid a pop I'm not too bothered.
