Newbie to road, looking for buying advice

So i was debating dome road stuff, normally ride only dirt (and motorbikes too). We;'re looking at doing the Alps next year for 3-4 climbs so i could ideally do with a bike to train on and ride currently.
Budget is <£1000 but ideally the lower the better of course.

However would welcome any other S/H bikes out there on any website really.
Whilst my knowledge of MTB's isn't bad... my knowledge of Roadie stuff is 0.

Alps, you say? Going to want to think about the gearing. Common crankset would be 39/53, but perhaps 34/50 (aka 'compact') would be more suitable, or maybe even a triple.B'Twin Sport 1
