installing rear wheel HELP!

Right hello everyone I have just signed up to this forum having encountered some difficulties with putting together my first bike. I got it second hand off ebay.

basically, when I attempt to put on the rear wheel using the quick release it just wont run smoothly. So, although I think i hace figured out why this I cant figure how to get around it. (Its worth pointing out now that Its all aligned properly so the wheel isn't rubbing into anything- at the moment the bike is pretty bare and so there are no derailleurs, brakes, cables, no chain etc. on it.)

Right so I have looked at it long and hard and and it seems as though when I tighten the quick release all it does is obviously tighten the nut against the dropouts. So I can see why it wont spin but there is clearly something wrong because I obviously have to be able to tighten the quick release and the wheel should still run smoothly.

I should also point out another thing...the bottom bracket doesnt rotate either when the wheel is detached from the bike- I dont know if it should/shouldn't I just thought it may hae something to do with it as the one on the front wheel appears to rotate freely..

I hope the above makes some sense and someone can offer me some help. I would be extremely grateful as I all I want is to just put this thing together and start riding!! Thans in advance to anyone

Forget the "bottom bracket" that is a different part entirely :?

If i read you correctly it sounds like the rear wheel axle is not turning ?
With the rear wheel out of the frame you should be able to turn the axle easily by hand, it should feel smooth and have very little resistance to turning.
The same goes for the front wheel.

    Look here for instructions http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/hub-overhaul-and-adjustment

Try it and let us know :D

If you have cup and cone bearings tightening the skewer compresses the axle making the bearings tighter.

Might be who ever assembled the hub didn't leave the required freeplay that the QR will take up on tightening.

Ah okay so I think that what you're referring to as the axle I mistakenly thought was the bottom bracket.

Right so you're saying this should spin freely. If so that could e the issue because it doesnt :D !!

For future reference the bottom bracket is the bearing the cranks / chainrings / pedals are attached to.

+2. No point in putting the wheel in the frame if the bearings are too tight or badly corroded so the axle won't spin. Need to sort that out first

I'e folllowed the other link posted above and yes it is cup and cone bearings.

Do you mean that when assembling the hub you shouldn't tighten the locknut fully- allowing for the "freeplay" ?

Cheers for your reply I sense I'm nearly on to it here :D

I think i have it sorted it now guys. I just loosed the locknut a little and then fitted the quick release skewer and it seems to spin properly now.

Thanks for the help...much appreciated !!
