Mavic Speedcity wheels, CL to 6-bolt adapter - help please..

Roadie so not at all familiar with disc brakes. Have RTFM but it is no help.

Could somebody please explain to me how the 6-bolt adapter is attached to the wheel?

I can see how the splines line up. Do I simply push the adapter on? Is there not then some form of lock-ring or mechanism for fixing it in place? There's a lock-ring-ish component in the bag of bits supplied but that looks as though it'll cover up the 6 bolt holes so that can't be right...

Confused!

What am I missing here?

Aha. If I fix the adapter to the disc first, I can then fit the lockring. Got it. Thanks.

What do I need to remove the 6 shiny silver things that are filling the (presumably threaded) holes where the bolts will go? A 1mm or 1.5mm hex key?

If I buy some centre-lock discs like these http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-slx-cen ... isc-rotor/ can I just avoid using the adapter altogether? The splines shown on this picture look different to the ones on my wheel - there are far fewer of them. Or are they just the splines for some sort of proprietary tightening tool?

the splines are a standard. just make sure the rotors are the same diameter.
