Hi,

apparently the new XT's come in 'trail' and 'XC' flavours according to Shimano.

From the shop listings though there seems to be no mention of this.

How can i make sure i get the right ones? Any tell tale signs?

Or

Is there actually only 1 sort?

    Where did you read that?
I know the XTRs come in two flavours, but I've not seen any mention of it with the XTs.
In fact, I just went to Shimano's website, and couldn't find any mention at all of the new XTs

Isn't it only the chainset that comes in Trail and XC versions?

I think RevellRider is right. From Shimano...
A trail oriented 2X10 crank debuts with a 38-26T chain ring set as well as a more XC oriented 40-28T combination.

Still can;t find any mention of two different braking systems.
What was the difference between the XTR versions, didn;t the race one just not have the cooling fins?

The twiddly bits on the race are more tucked away and I think it holds a bit less fluid. IIRC the pads are interchangeable, so it might just be the ones that come as standard.

    Aah. Very curious.
Sorry then, no help here, I've never heard of two XT versions before!
There does seem to be only one model number though, the 785, so that must signify that there's only one brake?
Maybe the pads that are supplied with each are different or something.

I guess it could be down to the brake pads as they don't list a different version of either the calliper or brake lever

Incidentally, I believe you're supposed to get a set of sintered, and a set of resin pads with the brakes. Not sure if it was an Evans mistake, but I only got sintered with mine. Not a problem, just a possible oversight.

    Cheers guys,

I was coming to the conclusion that there was just the one type.

I know you get pads with fins, or can use the older ones without.

Just wanted to make sure i'm going to get the right ones. The idea of spending £170 to pre order them was a little worrying when thinking there might be 2 types!

    Also,

Have you heard about the new rotors melting! Well, getting hot in the core and warping. Either way - Thats a little worrying.

Might stick to my solid stainless.

er, nope, the pads with fins or the pads without fins are both the same age, they're just options. The older XT brake pads will not fit the new XT 785.
But, I believe the XTR 985 pads are directly interchangeable.

Yes, I read about that, and it's pure scaremongering. One german magazine claimed this, and several independant analysts, as well as shimano have tried, and failed, to replicate the results.
If it was a genuine problem, then you can believe that every single other brake manufacturer on earth would have jumped on them.
The XTRs have been out for a while now, and I've heard of ZERO failures.
