No puncture, but tyre full of cuts

I was surprised to see how many holes, cuts and gashes there are on the tread of my 4 month old tyres.

All are <5mm, but many are quite noticeable i.e. an open gap.

No punctures, so the "armour" is doing it's job, but I wonder if this is a testament to the crap local roads (lots of debris & pot holes+++) or if it's just normal.

Not an issue - just curious.

 Get yourself some new tyres an d watch where and how you are riding.
Wherever we all are we all have to deal with the same poorly maintained roads that would probably shame former eastern bloc

Not sure what tyres you're using, but I've done 1200 miles since I took up cycling late last year, mainly on country lanes covered in various debris - the tyres are hardly showing a mark and no punctures. They're Specialized All Condition Armadillo Elites - I know some people think they give a hard ride, but they're fine for me and spending time riding, rather than by the road changing/repairing inner tubes is definitely the most important thing for me. Probably get a puncture on my next ride now!

It does depend on the roads, and also on the tyres. I have some 28mm Conti GP 4 Seasons which I use for commuting on a mix of suburban roads and glass-littered cyclepaths, the rubber looks like it's been through a shredder, but they've never punctured yet. I'll keep on riding them until they look really really bad, then replace.

Using Bontrager Race Lites here, and have had one puncture in ~1800k (when I overtook a hedge trimmer and got a massive thorn through the sidewall). Various cuts and nicks in the surface of the tyre but they're still doing well and no plans to replace them at the moment. Cheap, too!

Noticed a small hole in the rubber of my Ultremo R1's yesterday, only about 5mm across. Hasn't punctured yet but is exposing the layer underneath the rubber and as a result the sides of the tyre in that area are bulging ever so slightly. Ordered some new ones last night from Wiggle just to be safe cos that's just how I roll (get it eh eh?). Anyway do folks generally dump old tyres or keep them for emergencies? Have done nearly 2000km on the old ones but reckon there's still some mileage on the front one, not sure I trust the back one after seeing that little hole though, looks like it could go at any stage.

I sometimes carry an old folding tyre in winter as a spare, just in case one gets slashed by the rubbish on the roads on a ride. Also, tyres with a cut but plenty of life are useful for turbo / roller duties.

Dude, do you actually enjoy having a bike. I swear it's only complaints from you, and lots of them.

Yes it's normal. You tend to select certain routes down to which offers the better road surface.
