Ì just got one of these http://www.ridgeback.co.uk/bike/voyage and really like it
48/38/28 chainset and 32-12 cassette, STI shifters

I needed to tweak the indexing a bit afer the first few miles. It works OK except for the two biggest cogs when using the middle chainring. I've been able to use these gears on other bikes I've had. I know it's not ideal due to chainline issues etc., and I know the same ratios may be available using other gear combinations. But it's useful to use those gears occasionally, to avoid having to double-shift. Should these gear combinations be useable?

All gears should be usable. Some are not recommended due to the chain line issues you mentioned. Extreme cross gears will be a bit rough.

hmmm. It won't shift cleanly to 2nd and won't stay on 1st at all. Back to the shop I'd say.

Had another look - it was not set up right by the shop. Too much tension so that it was in top gear with one click to spare. No wonder it could not reach the biggest sprockets. Tossers! no way they could have checked the indexing. Just as well I knew what I was doing

I have come to the conclusion that most bike shop mechanics are the ones that weren't good enough to become car mechanics. Which is scary.

Please don't make sweeping genralisations - there are some fantastic mechanics in the trade - it's just that everyone posts their bad experiences - very few post their good experiences! :(

I agree with you on generalisations. Unfortunately my bike does not seem to have been set up by one of the fantastic ones.
