Absolutley incredible bike! How long have you been running the Hans dampf? Been looking at a set (trailstar) for my Cotic, I'd read that they wear fairly quickly though.

Edit* also, what problems did you have with stans tape? I'd be running the dampfs tubeless on flows.

That looks sweeter than ever!! I'll echo Specialeyes comments on the hans dampfs, thinking they may be a great front tyre match for nobby nics, how do they perform? great choice on the troy lee grips too, fantastic products and easily the best grip around, well worth the little bit extra :D

Any ideas for youre next project? ;)

    It's looking amazing John.

Does anyone know if the Troy Lee grips are a larger diameter then the ODI Ruffians. I was finding the Ruffians on my Jekyll to be a bit small, they cause a of bit discomfort on long or rough rides.

Question - do you have any jobs where you work?! Your fleet of bikes costs a fair amount more than my car. Hell, your Nomad is probably worth more alone.

Seriously stunning bike, bike of the year for me, every year until you get another bike.

*Glances at his Marin* 'pffft. Marin'. ;)

Nice to see you actually riding it too, there is always a worry that these kind of super bikes just sit around looking shiny!

    Cheers, thanks. :)
I've been running the Hans Dampf TL since the beginning of Dec '11 and they seem to whole up very well.
I too have heard that they wear fairly quickly. TrailStar has a softer compound. So this is why one of the reason I went with the PaceStar (Harder) Compound on the rear. And to have a better lower resistant.
I just checked on the wear today and the front(TrailStar) still looks pretty new.
The (PaceStar-Harder compound) has a wee bit more wear but its to be excepted from the rear. But more important, both have zero cuts on the knobs which my old Continental MK and Rubber Queens had only after a month of riding. :(
A pretty accurate review on these tyres from A very accurate review on Hans Dampf TL from Bike Radar and Pink Bike. I think if you do plan to go both TrailStar compound then I believe the rear will wear abit more quicker.

I think you will have no problems with Stan's yellow tape as you using it on Flow Rims.
I only had problems because it wasn't sticky enough and felt thin on my Enve rims. Plus I needed to make sure it stuck on well on my non tubless rims. So when with the recommendation on using Gorilla tape.
    Vodka anyone? "Honk"

    Cheers mate. :)

Had the same problem, as I too found the Ruffians too thin. Then I tried the chunky ODI Rogue. Much better but can be abit too soft sometime. Troy Lee ones are in-between the Ruffians and Rogue. And I think chick0 these will be just right for you. :) Also try the Lizard Skins Lock-On Peaty Grips. I think you will like those too.

Indeed love my Troy Lee grips, great colours too. :)
I think you will have an awesome combo with Hans upfront and Nobby at the rear.
I plan to do the same. I just picked up a Nobby Nics 2.25 a couple days ago and I may plan to change my rear Hans. Reason for this is I know the Nobby will be a wee bit quicker. I haven't done it yet as I've gone tubeless now and its a pain in the butt to change it. Plus I think I will wait until the Hans wears down more. :)

    Yes!!
I have another custom hardtail-Titiumum frame project which was started last year which I haven't finished yet. I blame my Nomad for that :D Also had a road bike project which is on hold because, again I blame my Nomad for that :D
But my new project this year will be (blame my Nomad for this :lol: ) .....a DH rig. :D 8)
Been waiting for some of the parts to come out. Most of it will or is available soon.
I'm looking at something like this...

    With new DH Enve rims

    Lovely bike there!

How do the troy lees compare to the lizardskins peatys? I need some new grips atm and cant decide which!
Also, how do the hans dampfs compare to say a 2.35 maxxis high roller or minion?

    Thanks

yep, thats what I thought with a hans/nobby nic combo, great speed and plenty of front end grip, just what I want :D means an extra half a pound or so I guess, but Im also looking at the new gatestar nobby nics, might have to get both and try them out. All the enve stuff looks great btw, the Am rims and DH bars are definitely top of my wishlist, kinda wish they did a 60mm stem to match. I know you have vast experience of tune hubs, have you ever had any problems with them?

Loving the sound of the custom ti HT, what kinda thing you gone for? would be awesome to get the likes of lynskey to make me a custom Ti, is it gonna be xc or am orientated? Good call on the V-10, should be an awesome build 8) I really think carbon is taking over the high end realms, its everywhere and with good reason imo, seems you agree too!

Btw, you have far, far too much money if you have that many builds on the go! have you still got the small fleet of cannondales too?

    Nice Nomad.

Interesting about the DHX Air though. I struggle to say anything positive about the one I had on mine, as do most who have had one on there.

The progressive nature of the VPP2 linkage should make it harder to bottom out, not easier - maybe a setup issue with the RP or faulty?

I would be surprised if the DHX offers any noticable differences in terms of heat resistance, just a PITA to set up and always a compromise.

    Hey Stav.
There is a job vacancy at my work place; I think there’s a CEO position coming up?
You Interested? What to be my boss? :D:lol::D

    Cheers for the kind words.
Indeed, I know a few these guys that have so many cool bikes and they hardly ride them. A shame really…..I’m glad I’m not one of them. I like servicing and keeping my bikes clean and shiny but I like to ride them more. Even more so with the Nomad.
Here’s a pic of the Nomad on a good day. We don’t really get mud out here, its more like clay.
    DSC03237.jpg

In fact, sometimes too hard. Had a wee bit of a crash :( and now having lots of free time to spend in front of the computer.
Though my wallet is hurting more then me. :(
    IMG_1870.jpg

Did a superman over my handle bar and the Nomad did a 180  and landed face down. Ooooo Ya!
Carbon brake lever, my Betty light but the worst is the Garmin. This was my second (first one I ran my car wheel over it) and will be my last one. Until Garmin brings a newer model.:D

Both grips are very similar in feel.
The Peatys feel a tiny wee bit thicker and firmer.
In the wet the Lees has more grip with the design/pattern but will wear more because of it.
But Troy Lee’s are louder with there cool colours that they have. One of the reasons, why I choose them. :D

Sorry I can’t compare or comment on Maxxis high roller or minion. As I’ve never try them. I will say I have heard nothing but praises about these tyres. Also what I do like about Maxxis is there widely available, value for money and there claim weight is almost spot on. :)

Haha, yep, sounds good. I'll start next week, I like my tea white with 2 sugars, cheers. ;)

Glad to hear it's ridden, but not good about the garmin, lever and light!!

Seriously though, absolutely amazing bike, I know it's a little tragic, but I always get a bit excited when I see an xgreygoose 'WIP' thread.. you know it's going to be a quality bit of reading.

EDIT - I feel this picture is kinda relevant to your WIP threads....

  • I feel the same as stav about xgreygoose threads lol! Can't wait for the dh one.

Cheers for the feedback on the tyres, will be looking at the pacestar for the rear!

Hence why I will from now on refuse to use alu frames if I can continue to afford carbon  think the HD will last me a while though! I really think it is going to take over the high to mid end scale of bikes over the next five years, by which time I reckon any HT over a grand or a FS over £2k will be full carbon, I rate it that highly
  • Carbon is sweet, hopefully I'll get a carbon bike one day and your bike is jaw dropping, absolutely fantastic looking thing!

Hey John, long time no here, it seems you still have the sweetest bike around, great attention to detail as usual.

I made the switch to road a few months back, in the process of selling my Lynskey, got another Ti fame in the stable and need to make room for a custom steel, do anything, rain /winter / CX bike. Might keep the sinle speed and put a Di2 Alfine on it to use the old time I venture out into the sticks.

Stunning bike. It has given me some good ideas for my own bike, and triggered the bike upgrade process that seems to come round every 3-4 years :D

If you ever feel the need to put a bash guard on your M980 Double, check out this beauty from TF-Tuned in Austria:

    http://tf-bikes.at/index-shop___angebote-custom_parts

    63g of CNC perfection

The Austrian/German riders on that site go to a whole new level of customisation, even getting rims and fork/shock adjusters colour matched. I am sure they could do them in gold............
