BB retaining clip

I've re-installed my Veloce crankset, and can't find the retaining clip.

Do I really need it?

If the answer happens to be yes, has anyone got a spare.

    There's some debate as to whether it's needed or not - it only aids assembly rather than performing some critical function.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    I would debate the "it only aids assembly! as it only get fitted after assembly. Also if it was a real safety bearing retainer why is there not one on the non drive side?
    I have always fitted them but when "spares" are found in the tool box I dont worry.
