Isn't it early for flying ants?

Noticed this morning on the way in that there were a few flying ants around and lots more on the way home. Got in the shower and discovered several had managed to get caught in my hair... yuck!

I thought it was usually mid-late July for them or am I wrong? Almost makes me glad I'm working from home part of this week - just so they can die out rapidly....

Yeah, I went for a 10k run with the running club along the disused rail track from Finsbury Park and I think I ate enough flying ants to meet my protein RDA.... The air was thick with the blighters...

noticed our compost heap in the garden was full of ants a few days ago, had a look yesterday and the winged ones were just emerging.

The May fly arrived about two weeks earlier than usual this year.

On the subject of insects, after the run yesterday, went back to the bike to tootle off home and there was a massive Stag Beetle on the rear wheel! If I hadn't noticed it, it would have been crunched as I set off...
