I have a chain that seems to have a joining link in it - brand new Specialized bike - does this mean it wil be easier to remove the chain for cleaning etc?

If so, how do I do it?

    9 speed.

I've no idea what make though. The whole drivetrain is Shimano - would that mean the chain is too?

not if it has a joining link. just push the two ends of the link in on themselves and the link should come apart.

It's not necessary to remove the chain to clean it though....

I got fed up of messing about yesterday running it through a rag and spraying degreaser everywhere. If I can pop if off, soak it in solvent and stick it back on that sounds like it would save hours!

Put degreaser into a tray, paint it on with a paint brush, wash off with a hose.

    Simples.
