gear lever replacement
hi
out riding today my gear lever snapped off. i haven't a clue if its called this on a road bike but basically the little paddle you use to change gears. it is a sram force double-tap shifter, i think the 2009 model. can i replace just this individual part, or would i have to buy a completely new brake/gear shifter unit thingy. also if i do need to replace the entire unit can i re-use the bar tape i have on at the moment as i just bought it and don't want to be shelling out more cash than i need to.
any help much appreciated
thanks

Can't answer the SRAM question jh, but removing the bartape often destroys it. But then i have managed to do it successfully on some bikes. Its a bit hit and miss really.0

finally got the sram spare parts manual to work, maybe able to get something there0

You can reuse bar tape if it's decent quality. You'll know as soon as you peel it off if you can re-wrap it.
As for the lever, you CAN replace virtually any part of the shifter, but it can be hard to get the correct part. If you've got the parts manual and the actual part number, get in touch with Fisher's Outdoors (http://www.fisheroutdoor.co.uk). They are Sram distrubutor in the UK and they can advise you on how to get the parts you want. Bit of an odd one - but you'll actually have to order the part from a Sram dealer (LBS) and then Fisher's will ship it to them. THey don't sell to the public direct.
I think Evan's might have special orders division that can sort it.
It may be easier to buy a used SET of shifters off ebay though. Usually ordering a single shifter is actually more expensive than buying a pair 9(no discount on a single, but can buy a pair on sale).0 -
the tape's worth about £20 apparently so i think i should be able to re-use it with a bit of tape adhesive. i can get stuff ordered from fisher's but the manual doesnt seem to give a part number for the bit that's broken. i fear it may be the actual mechanism itself, in which case its not worth repairing. i'll try and get a photo when my camera gets back from the shop

If it is the mechanism, it may be under warranty. Or did it break in a fall?
Describe the problem in greater detail if you can.0 -
the lever is mounted on a little rod, which allows it to move round the ratcheting system of the double tap mechanism. it's held on with what is basically 2 titanium rings which are part of the mechanism. these rings have just snapped whilst changing down gears. it should be a warranty replacement but unfortunately i'm not the original owner so it will require a little bit of persuasion to get replaced.0

I've broken a few of my second hand levers and never managed to get them replaced under warranty. Which is why I'm now buying them from a retailer at the best price I can find. At least I'll be covered next time.
Hope you get yours fixed.0
