Right, i've been approved for a 0pc credit card, so a new bike is on the cards (so i don't need to get finance) Also means there's no rush to sell mine to fund the upgrade.

Now, the bike i've seen is a kuota kharma, but there are a few options. 105 or rival, i'm going to go for rival, but there are two wheel choices, shimano r500 or mavic askiums.(Mavics come at an £80 premium)

I know neither are that great, so my question is, is it worth getting the mavics for the 100g weight loss? 1900g for the r500s vs the 1800g for the mavics. (It's crazy to realise my mtb wheels are lighter than my road wheels).

Rekon it's the best bet to save the £80 and get the shimano wheels, with the view toget something much better in a few months time? Or just order some aftermarket wheels and whack them straight on, selling the r500s?

(I'm only going to get the bike if the bike fit i'm going to get shows that it's the right fit for me)

Stick some Mavic Ksyrium Elite's or RS80's on it and sell the stock wheels.
  • Neither may be great - but the Mavic's are far from shabby in that price bracket. In fact they are probably the best all rounders at that price. I am in a very similar position to you as I'm considering taking the plunge on a Kharma with Rival (I thought the premium to move up to Ultegra didnt warrent the benefits). My plan is to pay the extra £80 and get the Aksiums, use my new RS80's in the fairer weather (ahem...) and swap over to the Aksiums for Winter.

cadseen - an excellent deal, but I thought they'd sold out now?

Go for Rival groupset - at lot more robust than 105 which has some reliability issues.

If your wheel budget is tight, look at Planet-X model Bs
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I have the same bike and setup matey....Kuota Kharma with the R500s and 105....

Been riding it for nearly 2 years and bloody love it. Finally got round to upgrading the wheels though. The R500s are still absolutely perfect after 18 months of riding and commuting! Both sets of wheels spin up alright, the only difference you might see is when going up hills....but for 100g is it worth the extra £80? As has been said, see if the shop will do you a deal to upgrade the wheels to a very well spec'd set - RS80s are very good wheels and do look nice!
