Hi all,

Just after a bit of advise really - thinking about updating my group-set on my bike. what i want to know is how interchangeable are components.

i currently have the most basic of components on my - bike Shimano 2300, non branded cranks/cassette and tektro brakes.

I have been looking at tiagra and 105 which i know will be so much better - but what with money being tight i cant afford the whole group-set at once.

If i was for example to buy 105 brakes - on offer at the moment can i use them with the 2300 STi shifters. what about a 105 derailleur and Tiagra shifters.

Just some general advice will be appreciated.

Rubertoe.

tbh if it's fitted with 2300 then given the cost of changing you might be better off saving up and looking for a higher-spec bike secondhand, i really think that'd be better value

my posh bike has sram red, and i've got a bike with 105, but i've had bikes with 2300, it works, ok it's a bit limited for range vs. 10-speed, but really it is ok, set it up right, it's tough, and does the job
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Yeah I'd seriously consider saving up the cash and upgrading the whole bike. If you sell your current bike as it is and add it to the cost of a new tiagra groupset, you'd easily have enough to get a fantastic second-hand bike with those components (if not better). The frame and wheels will be stiffer and lighter too. You'd be amazed at how many 'nearly-new' second hand bikes there are out there (and not just dodgy ones!).

If you do decide to upgrade, my chief concern regarding compatibility would be with the drive train. You'd probably need to upgrade the cassette, chainset, mechs and levers all at once, which is the vast majority of what you're talking about!

If you are tempted to upgrade a bit at a time the key thing is to match shifters and cassette / chain.

ie the current / recent 105 is 10 speed, so if you bought 105 shifters you'd need 10 speed cassette / chain too.

Current Tiagra is 9 speed, so if ........ you get the idea.

Be aware there's older 9 speed 105 and Ultegra stuff available on Ebay, so provided you match the speed (and hence cable pull / sprocket spacing) you can mix n match for instance run Ultegra shifters with a new Tiagra cassette.

However, I'd echo the advice above. If what you have still works OK, save for a better bike. Much better value for money
