Chain snapped, now what?

Hi,

My chained snapped today, on a large hill, on a busy road, with no pavement in the middle of no where.

Luckily I eventually bumped into a kindly mountain biker with a chain tool and SRAM quicklink.

Are quicklinks just a quick fix until you can find something more permanent or can I carry on as normal until the chain or quicklink wears out?

The chain is a 9 speed dura ace model but only a couple of months old so I don't want to bin it. Would it be better to try and find some more links from somewhere or if the circumstances allow run it with 2 links missing?

Thanks for you're help!

assuming the quick link is a compatible 9 speed then it will be okay
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Yes, SRAM links are permanent and strong, keep using for the life of the chain.

I would be very wary of using a chain that had snapped after only a couple of months. Why has it snapped? Faulty, bad fitting, other equipement interfering with it's operation all those things would go through my mind before I even thought of riding again.

Just check the rest of the side plates (both sides) for cracks... every Shimano chain I've had suffered from what might be described as dodgy workmanship when compared to KMC or Wipperman... oh I dont use shimano chains long since.... never had a chain break on me and boy do I use power

    "Now what?"

Buy yourself a chain tool and some spare powerlinks, and don't worry about the repair.

(If the chain does break again, I'd be tempted to assume it is faulty and bin it.)
