Replacing helmets after an off

Had an off today on a wet level crossing (one of the ones where the rails run at a wierd angle to the road) , managed not to get run over by the car behind, and have just got a bit of road rash in the usual places (and a bruised ego  ) However my head hit the ground quite hard (enough to give me a headache) - so questions is...

should helments be replaced after a hard knock even though there isn't any split or crack?

all words of wisdom appreciated

There is only one word of wisdom needed - "yes".

Its recommended to replace them after any impact....

Apparently the foam is meant for 1 time use only... damage it and its integrity is compromised.

Definitely replace it. The open cell liner material (polystyrene-like stuff) compresses in an impact and would be useless in another impact in the same spot.

Some manufacturers have crash replacement policies so you maybe able to save a fair bit of money doing it that way (i saved about 60% with specialized)

If it's not cracked you'd probably be ok.

But 'probably be ok' is not good enough for me.

I was in the same boat as you and decided to replace my helmet. The very next ride (a race) I landed on my head/shoulder at nearly 30mph. New helmet worked wonders. Would the old one have worked? Possibly. But why the hell take the risk?...

Just been through an identical dilemma. Would have used Giros replacement policy but decided to upgrade via the planet x sale and got myself an Atmos instead of the Saros I crashed.

As per previous comments you must replace after any bang to the helmet

Any excuse to buy some new gear is good enough for me :) sadly it looks like Rudy Project don't do a reduction for crash replacement.

I'm looking at Giro Atmos but I measure 59cm which is just on the Medium / Large divide. The LBS don't sell them (thats why I had a rudi project) anyone know if the atmos adjusts up small or large?

    thanks in advance
