anybody else find this ? that segment of the road which is lined off for bike use and where i live is usually full of broken glass and it becomes puncture avoidance instead of vehicle avoidance.

anyone else find this ?

  • Yes plus ours are usually full of parked cars, i can only imagine the plebs haven't got the required skill to manouvre their cars on to the drive.

Same here - it's actually more dangerous to be in the cycle lane (dodging glass) than not! And just out of interest, how does the glass get there? What self-respecting person walks/drives along and throws a glass bottle on the ground? Crazy!

I went for a ride yesterday which saw me much further from home than I planned. A lot of the cycle lanes outside of Manchester are ok, the ones in Manchester (especially near Gorton etc) seem to have been diligently sprinkled with a uniform layer of glass; not good. Just ended up cycling on the road.

Glass gets there from RTAs. When the police or highways agency clear the road to get traffic going again a lot of the glass is simply just swept to the side to be cleared at a later date (a process that seems to take as long as it does to get a pot hole filled!)

To be fair to the police/HA they have a lot of other things more important to be getting on with other than picking up every shard of glass.

A lot of the cycle paths near me are never maintained, they are covered in debris from passing traffic, tree roots breaking through or overgrown foliage that slaps you in the face making you duck and dive it, with all the councils cutting costs, they are even switching thousands of street lights off round here, theres no chance for cycle paths to get maintained.

I rarely use them unless they are pristene, due to all the debris swept in by passing cars, not to mention all the grids.

I prefer to cycle in the road irrespective of cycle lane availability, but I stick as close to the side of the road as is practicable / safe.
