105 brifters: 5600/5601/5603 which one?
Need to buy new 105 shifters. Bike is Madone 4.5 2008 with compact chainset.
I was under the impression that (for 105) there was only one shifter type and it worked with both compact and triple, but now that I look there are 5601 - double - and 5603 - triple - variants. There may even be a 5600 version, looking at the Shimano techdocs. I'm assuming that it is the 5601 ones that I need. Am I correct?
One other reason why I thought the shifters were one-size fits all is that when I use the left shifter to change chainring, it has always felt like it need two presses and I've always assumed that this is because they are designed for triples as well and that if i had a triple, that first shift would shift one ring and the next press would get me to the next. Is that how it feels to anyone else, or is it just badly set up?

5603 will work on a double you just set the adjustment screws on the mech so you cannot use the lowest position.
My Scott came with a double chainset operated by a 5603 lever. Which was fortunate because I switched to a triple anyway.0 -
Thanks for the replies. I think I must have 5603 now, but will probably go with 5601.
Flasher, if I change to 5700, will it work with my 5600 brakes and with my existing 5600 front and rear mechs?0
