problem changing from 53/42 to compact

I currently have a 53/42 campy centaur on my bike and have just been trying to put a compact on - going on a holiday in the alps soon. I thought it would be easy: take the current chainset off (sqaure taper) and take of the assosciated front derailer the put the compact on and put the compact front derailer on. However when i put the new chainset on it is considerably further in (at least 5mm) such that the derailer wont go far enough in even with full adjustment.
What am i doing wrong?
thanks

And the compact chainset was Campag as well?0

Just guessing until the OP posts more detail:
Assuming the compact c'set was also square taper and is non-campag then it is likely to require a JIS taper BB, not an iso taper (i.e. campag).--

Thanks for quick response. The chainset is campagnolo compact so should be like for like. It seemed as I was putting the compact on that it took considerably more tightening up than the one I removed (and then put back on again after this failure).0

Hmmmm, do you really need a compact FD though? And have you tried the old FD to see if it has enough range?
Otherwise the obvious solution would be to get a BB with a longer spindle.0 -
Is the compact chainset Centaur as well? The Chorus and Record chainsets need a 102mm spindle length and others Centaur, Veloce etc 111mm. I think that might give the opposite problem though.Who you gonna believe? Me or your own eyes?0

To answer these points:
I had the compact FD anyway so fitted it and observed the problem so then tried fitting the original FD instead, result was that this would also be too far out from the frame.
On Domhnall Dearg's point - this sounds like the root of the problem. I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and buy a 111mm BB to find out, a 9mm offset sounds about right for what I'm seeing, guess I should measure the one in there 1st though.
This should have been simple!

I am still confused becuase, like you have explained, you have changed like for like.
Perhaps if you go through the old Campag product catalogues you might find a sneaky change of axle length.0 -
Problem resolved. I took out the 102mm BB and put a 110mm in its place and all now lines up as it should. I had naively thought all double cranksets would use the same length BB and this is patently not the case.
Thanks for all the input without which I could not have resolved this.0
