Physical factors that determine a good pair of shorts ?

Up to 40 miles my altura shorts are fine , but once i go beyond that distance , my sit bones area starts to get real uncomfortable. The saddle on my bike is a charge spoon by the way. Shorts prices range from the preposterous charges by assos to the cheap and nasty. What Im asking is, are there readily identifiable factors in shorts that you know said purchase is going to be a good one ?

What type of insert do you have? Gel, Foam? Is it one solid block or lots of sections?
Also how long have you been cycling? A certain amount of pain is simply down to your sit-bones getting used to it. When I first started riding, 15 - 20 miles and my sit bones were hurting to the extent i spent most of the time out of the saddle now I don't even notice till around 40-50 and even then it's not "pain".
As you've mentioned it could be your saddle as well, just because a saddle or shorts are a good expensive pair doesn't mean it's right for you. Try and see if you can borrow a saddle off a friend or something to see if there is a difference that way?0
