So, I have been reading on here for some time that riding in a group can improve your average speed .... well, I went out on my first group ride last night, and I am very happy to report that.... it does ..!

Having not been able to break the 18 mph avg (to be honest that is on a fairly good day, normally around the 17 - 17.5) last night I managed 19mph... :D

I am however absolutely knackered this morning ...!!

Just wanted to share ... :)

I could average 21 on the right day on my own, i raced the other night at an average of just under 27 over an hour !! Yes, it can make a huge difference

  • 27 mph ... Blimey..! I still have some way to go then ...! :P

Guess I should put my statement into some context ... That was done over 35 miles with a 1400 feet elevation gain .....

I should put mine into context as well perhaps  It was dead flat, no wind, the surface had just been relayed and it was with mostly Elite, cat 1 & 2. Cat 4's were sitting in easy...

I find riding with a group, where they are stronger, makes you push yourself alot harder.

I push myself as hard as I can when I ride alone, just so I have a chance of keeping pace with everyone I ride with. I've only been riding a year, but that year has been spent training with some very strong riders (albeit MTB) and it has drastically improved my fitness.

I'm sure I wouldn't be in anywhere near as good of fitness as I am if I hadn't been riding with them.

+1. The other incentive is that if you get dropped you tend to get lost.
