Road Training Tyres for HT MTB

Another tyre thread, but couldnt find anything to clear up the issue. Looking to do a bit of road training to build up fitness levels, currently running a 2.35 highroller and a 2.1 crossmark and it's the proverbial 2 steps forward, 1 step back, the drag is just horrendous on tarmac.

Where i'll be riding (country lanes) there isnt likely to be any sharp debris so extra puncture protection isnt a necessity

I've been considering a couple of avenues and am seeking a little opinion/advice on tyres to go for.

So far I'm considering:

Moving the crossmark to the front and putting a 1.9/2" slick on the back, Eg. Schwalbe city jet.

A pair of high volume slicks such as the schwalbe big apple or supermoto
or
A pair of low volume commuter style slicks, city jet or similar, would probably need new tubes aswell, I presume?

Would be a bonus to have a set that I could have a quick trail blast on, hence the first option, without having to change tyres, but not a necessity as I will be focusing mainly on the fitness training.

Basically, I've weighed up the options and still dont have a clue what I want, if anybody could nudge me in the right direction then please do.

The cheaper the better aswell, not too keen on spending any more than £40 for something that's basically downgrading me to a roadie, it just wouldnt feel right!

Many thanks in advance.

Simon

    Schwalbe city jet

I've got these in 1.9", they're around the 650g mark if I remember rightly and they are great. I've got them pumped up to around 80psi and the lean I can get on smooth tarmac corners is awesome LOL, it's all about the lean  I've got them on a separate set of wheels that I chuck on the bike for commuting and getting in the road miles etc.

No punctures yet and the rubber is not too hard but they are quite thick so should last a long time.

    On-one do them for £10

    do it!

These work pretty well for me on my all-purpose bike. Centre tread for speed on roads and side treads for trails. Just don't expect them to do much on anything other than light trails.
    Puncture protection too.

They are heavy though, but that'll get you fitter faster.

Cage, thanks for the tip off to on-one, unfortunately they didnt have any 1.9" city jets in stock, but I did find the schwalbe super moto 2.35" in stock and for a steal at £20 a piece, got a pair for a smidgen over what a single tyre costs.

Will report back on what riding a "balloon tyre" is like, should take the sting out of what is quite a stiff back-end on my bike too, which will be nice.
