Chainset for Spesh Stumpjumper 2003 model

Been out of the mtb game for a while and my bike has been gathering dust. I want to overhaul it and start by upgrading the old Specialized 'strongarm' chainset for a nice light hollowtech or straight through axle type chainset.

My question is, will a 'modern' chainset fit this frame?

    yes anything will fit.

    you will need the BB shell facing if this is the first external BB fitted.

    Also, can you recommend a nice light crankset for about £80 - 100? I'm guessing XT but wondered if there were other options?
