Advice on flat pedals please

I haven't managed to get back on my bike since breaking my ankle back in January. I have stuck some old mtb pedals on my road bike at the moment and I'm getting a bit of time in on a turbo trainer trying to regain a bit of the movement and muscle I've lost (one leg looks like a match stick, but I guess that's what 14 weeks in plaster will do).
My physio doesn't want me using my spd's for a good long while yet and to be honest, I'm a bit worried about putting them back on anyway. I was very new to spd's but loved the feeling. What is the best way to get as close to that feeling as possible but with flat pedals.
Thank you.
(My poor mountain bike won't be getting a run out any time soon and even then will be relegated to cycling up and down the canal path. The temptation for me to jump off of stuff is just too great).

I had a big injury a few years ago, tore all the muscles & ligaments in my right leg.
After surgery, getting all the drugs out of my system & learning to walk (more than that, just trust that my leg could hold me). I took up snowboarding (as I thought the boot would protect my leg & give it support).
I couldn't bring myself to try and skateboard again & risk my ankle on it.
Do the physio, get the giant rubber band & work at it. Hard.
As far as the bike goes, maybe try cages or 1/2 ones, but do them up a little loose.
Until you rebuild your confidence in it atleast.
Good luck!Welcome to Hoogerland, Population: Heroes.
