Garmin 705 not connecting to PC - FIXED

My 705 has crashed twice after long rides when I did not switch it off after the ride. The symptoms have been that when switched off and then connected to the PC via USB instead of going into mass storage mode (picture of PC on screen) it just switches on and starts looking for satellites. When you force it into mass storage mode the PC does recognise a removable drive but does not see it as a Garmin and Garmin Connect or Webupdater will not recognise it.
The first time it happened I ended having to send it off for a replacement however last night a very helpful lady from Garmin in the US showed me how to fix it and I thought I should share this....

1. Remove the SD card from the device, if you have an SD card. Note: This should only be done to prevent accidently re-formatting the map card.

2. Plug the unit into the PC and enter USB mass storage mode.

3. Save off the file "gmapbmap.img" located in the directory "Garmin". Optional Files to recover:
a. Save off any recoverable courses in the directory "Courses".
b. Save off the file "current.gpx" in the directory "Garmin\GPX\current".

4. Format the internal mass storage drive. Use the following settings:
a. File System: FAT32
b.Volume label: GARMIN

Note: Use the default settings for any other parameters DO NOT use the "Quick Format" option for this format.

5 Create a folder called "Garmin" in internal mass storage drive.

6. Place the saved off file "gmapbmap.img" in the directory "Garmin". Note: If you are unable, to save off the "gmapbmap.img" see additional instructions below for restoring the default file system.? Optional files to restore:
a. Create a directory called "Courses" in the "Garmin" directory and put all saved off courses back onto the unit in the "Courses" directory.
b. Create a directory called "GPX" in the "Garmin" directory and "current" in the directory "Garmin\GPX" and put the saved off file "current.gpx" in the directory "Garmin\GPX\current".

For (2) to force the unit into Mass Storage mode switch it off, hold the thumb stick in the up position and then plug in the USB lead keeping the stick up until the PC picture appears.

For (3) gmapbmap.img is the basemap file which they sent to me, PM me if you want a copy. I had lost the courses and current.gpx files but that did not matter.

Using Explorer on the PC you click on My Computer and you will see the 2 removable drives (mine were H: and I: ). The first drive is the 705 unit the second the SD card/slot.

Double clicking on the first drive comes back with an error along the lines of "Cannot access folder drive requires formatting" click the Yes to reformatting and follow the instructions above.

Once done use explorer to set up the folder structure as above, copy in the basemaps file then disconnect and switch on.

For me this fixed it, once the unit found the satellites it recreated the current.gpx file in the correct folder and then when I reconnected to the PC it went into mass storage mode correctly.

Other than losing the detailed history of my last ride this was a 10 minute job saving a 2 week turn around by going down the replacement route.

Hope this helps someone.
