Headsets and forks
Can anybody explain the difference between a fork that needs a hidden/integrated headset and one that needs a threadless headset. The reason is that I have purchased a frame that needs a threadless headset(external cups pressed into head tube) but all the forks on Ribble or CRC say they need hidden. Have i bought a dud and will struggle to find a fork to fit?

There are two types of threadless fork, those with an integrated crown and those without. With an integrated crown, the top and bottom bearings of the headset fit directly into the headtube, which is machined to accomodate them. For forks without an integrated crown, the headset still has external cups which must be pressed into the head tube, just the same as with a threaded fork/headset.
You should be able to find a fork with a non-integrated crown quite easily, such as

I'm assuming you're looking for 1/1/8th forks, not 1 inch - in which case you would find it a lot harder, though not impossible.0 -
In this case is it not more to do with the design of the fork to look smother with the "New" frames with the 44mm OD on the head tube.
dont know of any fork with integrated races on them. would limit bearing options even more.
Edit just found the 1 3/8 "standard with the integrated crown race. Madness."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Look HSC carbon forks have the lower crown race moulded in the carbon fibre, so you just drop the sealed bearing on it and hey presto, done. Their rationale apparently is you save the approximately 15 grams a crown race typically weighs.
I've also got an older Time Featherlight carbon fork on another bike, which has a 1" steerer tube in carbon (!) and the lower crown race was bonded on, as in glue!!!!! Worse, the race itself is a very thing conical piece of steel, with the 45 degree contact angle moulded in teh carbon as well.
