Van Nich Astraeus - Headset type?

I have just upgraded to a Van Nich Astraeus frame under warranty. The 2011 frame spec suggests that I need a 41mm internal headset, but I am struggling to find one

I am looking to find someone that knows their headset standards, or someone who owns a 2011 Astraeus and can advise me.

Details of the headtube as follows:

Internal diameter = 41mm
External Diameter = 45mm
Bore depth (to the 45 degree lip inside the headtube) = 9.5mm

Assumptions:
When Van Nic say 'internal headset', they mean Zero-stack / Internal headset and not 'Integrated headset'
(The Van Nich website appears to be out of date as it still quotes an FSA Orbit MX headset as a 'compatible choice' when you try a custom build on their site)

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks...
Simon G

    Nicklouse,

I'd be inclined to agree with you given the fact that 41mm is the standard dimension for IS (integrated), but the bore depth to the inner lip of over 9.5mm means that the 'drop in' bearing would be too deep in the frame.

Every ZS (zero stack) 'internal' headset out there on sale seems to require a headtube internal diameter of 44mm, but Van Nich's website does use the word 'internal' and not 'integrated' to describe the headset.

Thanks for the link. I'd already found the page, but it did prompt me to carefully read through the information again. I've contacted VN to ask directly which headset model they would choose, but I was keen to order a good quality headset this weekend - hence my post on Bike Radar.

I like the way the site lists an External headset as the only build option.

the image on their site does look like a Zero stack as well.

is it not the Campy integrated? ID of 42? and headtube of 46mm the bearings are 8mm thick.

    good luck.

    Nicklouse,

Yes, you'd expect the website to be up-to-date wouldn't you. The cheat's route of looking at the spec for the whole bike usually works well when faced with this sort of dilemma, but sadly not on this occasion.

I did find a 1000mile review with pictures where the author referred to the use of an FSA internal headset, but when I head to the FSA site to look at the various standards, there's no appropriate size listed.

The campy standard is certainly one of the deepest Integrated headsets out there, but it still doesn't look deep enough.

Ah well, if nothing else, we've brushed up our knowledge of the headset standards haven't we!

I'll post a response when I find out what Van Nich have to say!

    Thanks again,

Download the headset tech guide from the FSA website it has all the standards, dimensions etc - there are many and some only vary slightly.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Do headset bearings have any info or code stamped on them?
