Is it possible to upgrade my 8 cog cassette from a12-25 to 11-25?

I have a Shimano 2300 system.

The guy in my LBS said it couldn't be done... he mentioned something like you couldn't get an 11-teeth cog on an cassette with 8 cogs...

Thanks,
Robert

Is it a cassette or a freewheel?

If you can find a Shimano-compatible 11-25 8 speed cassette, then yes. But I suspect they don't exist.

11-25 might be hard to find, but 11-21 is available. 11-28/32/34 is also so available as MTB 8-speed, so no reason a 11 won't fit.

it all depends on weather your cassette body is hyprglide compact or not. if not its not possible to fit an 11t sprocket weather the cassette is available or not. Although 11-25 on an 8 speed would do my head in because of the massive jumps between gears. My 12-23 is bad enough.
