Last time I had cantilever brakes, I found them pretty awful. Are modern ones better? The Focus Mares has Avid Shorty 4 brakes. How do they rate to short reach calipers?

They're no different to what they used to be, if that helps. :(

hmmm a local newly opened bike shop trying to sell them off as better than the old ones. Sounds like just sales talk, so will avoid that bike shop.

Might be a bit harsh to avoid them altogether. Maybe they are ever so slightly better, but turn again its probably down to better pads.

They still do the job, just jot as good as calipers. Not a reason to not buy a cross bike.

My mares came with mini v brakes . I swapped them out for cantis. The stopping power was initially better with the mini v but clearance is poor and switching wheels is a faff because they're just so close to the rim.

Depends what you went the bike for?[/quote]

Forgot to mention, braking with mini v's on the sti levers was really bad. I wouldn't recommend them at all, that's the main reason I changed

For all cantis - set-up is critical. The good thing about modern designs is greater adjustability, particularly cartridge brake shoes / pads with orbital adjustment wich makes pad exchange far easier. I agree regarding vees vs cantis - if you're going anywhere near mud, mini-vees are hopeless. I have some TRP CR950s on my cross race bike - they're as good as any caliper IME.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
