i have a 1 year old m520 shimano spd pedals that is giving some play. between the less used right pedal and the more excessively used left pedal, the left pedal is having some up and down play when forced, the two pedal feels clearly differently and the left is making creaking noise when forced.

is my pedal broken? i think it all depend on how the pedals is attached to the turning nuts, it may be nothing if it is attached securely or if it is not i think it may fall off anytime. last time i want is for the pedal to break off the crank when forced but i am also quite attached to my old pedal like a pair of old trainers, and would rather not replace it if i can.

also i've ask the forum before and the general view is that pedals last forever.

cheers.

You need a special tool to dismantle the pedals. The axle and bearings screw out of the pedal body. Once out it is easy to see if the bearings are shot, easy to adjust them and easy to regrease.
I would be surprised if they are completely shot in one year, i have a set from a MTB which have lasted about 5 years.
The tool you need is this one

    There is a video here

This is a more expensive pedal which uses a spanner rather than the special tool.

    Hope this helps.
Lastly, how are you using one pedal more than the other?

never knew that you can take the pedals apart, from the video it looks like they are quite securely attached and i dont have to worry about it breaking off. it is only the creaking that i will try to ignore. will try to give it a clean.

using one side more than the other, simple, 24 miles commute a day in towns with traffic light, roundabout and the lots, so a lot of cliping and uncliping the left pedal over a two dozen time a trip while the right pedal is mistly never uncliped. one wonder if i could just replace the left and right and secure it with some nut lock.

You can get a new pair off ebay for £14. Probably cost you that in new tools and your time to fix them.

Can't swap left with right as they are different threads and it would put the binding mechanism the wrong way round I think.
