New bike niggle - comments?

I am the god of hell fire
edited May 2011 in Road buying advice
Hi

This one is pretty minor but is bugging me - a lot

I got my new bike last week

After its first 1h ride I noticed the metal cap from the front mech cable had fallen off and the cable had started to splay and fall apart

Ordinarily Id be philosophical however as a replacement Dura-ace 7900 cable set will cost me 20 quid (not much compared to bike I admit) and as it fell off pretty much immediately I contacted the supplier to ask for a new cable

I clearly didnt ask bluntly enough as they gave me details of the mail order part of their website to buy a new one
I emailed back and am waiting for a response

Am I being unreasonable here in asking for a new cable?
Its almost certainly not been crimped leading it to fall off within an hour and the now I need a new cable which Id rather not spend another 20 quid on

Thoughts??

Go to your LBS and ask them for a cap (i got mine for free ) then just trim the cable and crimp it on - 2 minute job!

You're going over the top - twirl the cable between your fingers and this will correct the splaying. Get a new cable crimp pop it on and then give it a squeeze. Job done.

If the worst comes to the worst you only need one new Shimano gear cable rather than a full set, which is hardly £20. Not surprised that the shop have given you a wide berth for such a minor issue tbh even if they did sell you the bike.

If you've bought a bike with full DA, you must surely be able to sort out a minor problem like this without crying your eyes out over it.
  • Thanks for the sympathy guys :)

The cable has been trimmed so close to the mech and has splayed so much that its impossible to get another cap on

    Ive tried the pliers trick
I have a stash of my own caps
    Its not going to happen

    Cheers!!

Hey Buddy my post was trying to be helpful sorry if you found it offensive - not so sure about the other guy though!

If thats the case i think it would be reasonable for the supplier to send you a new cable.

^^ You are right! I could have been a bit more sympathetic to the cause!

As Solboy has suggested the shop ought to supply you with a new cable (as it won't be costing them anything like £20) and possibly replace it on the spot - it should be a 5 minute job.
  • Many thanks
I can feel the love from here now :)

I wouldnt have minded if it wasnt Duraace
My old Ultegra cables were replaced (by me!) in minutes a couple of weeks ago at a cost of peanuts but I cant find 7900 for less than 20 quid and as far as I can see:

    a) its not compatible with the regular Shimano stuff
    b) why should I pay for a poor initial fit??

    Cheers

Unless I'm very much mistaken, a front mech cable is a front mech cable - surely? £3 and 5 minutes in your LMB should have it fixed.

My LBS even trade gear cables for packets of biscuits.

Why do you need an entire cableset? You can buy the inner, this was the first result i clicked in google

I would just cut it shorter with proper cable cutters and recrimp it, it will be fine until you need to replace the cable, all your mech adjustment can be done with the barrel adjusters in the meantime.
