Shimano 105 (5700) SL pedal issue...

So i was out on a nice ride today, aiming for 60km and 15km out a clicking starts in the left pedal. Thought it was the cleat at first but turned out to be the pedal bearing was actually shifting under load... now on the 105s theres a plastic knurled nut to adjust bearing preload and this was so tight i couldnt move it in either direction by hand. 5km later and the pedal seizes completely - I could just about turn it by hand. Fortunately I was near a garage that was open and they managed to loosen the plastic nut with a pair of molegrips (which didnt do it much good of course) and reduce the stiffness in the pedal to nearly usable proportions, so i cut the ride short and came home - which was a lot slower and harder...
Got home and I can loosen off the knurled nut a short way (still needs molegrips) but then it wont go any further and the whole bearing locks solid. Obviously its fubar'd and these pedals are less than 300km and 6 weeks old...
I've looked at the Shimano site but other than a parts list which shows i could probably order replacement parts there's no other info about disassembly or repair. Looks like I'll have to take them back to Evans  for replacement, but they may quibble about the chewed up nut

Couldn't find anything on BR for SPD-SL pedal maintenance; can anyone post a link or suggest how these should be disassembled...?
Evans swapped the pedals without quibbling and agreed there was 'something wrong' so sent them back to Shimano... good result...
