My dad is buying a new bike and is currently torn between two; Trek 4900 dis and the Specialized rockhopper sl. Which is best, or is there a better one for approximately £600-£700?
Just ride.

They are very similar - the dart 3 fork on the spesh is arguably better than the suntour on the trek - a few issues back in mbuk I'm sure there was a group test on bikes in this range, try searching bike radar's reviews they should be up incase they were the same models your asking about (can't remember), The speshs often get good reviews.

If in doubt see if he can sling a leg over both and see which one feels better to ride on...

Trust an Alfa (edit)owner to go on looks lol.
They are both good bikes so I'd recommend ride and see.

  • I have a Trek and my wife has a mans rockhopper (she is as tall as me 6ft 3) so based on riding them both... they feel pretty much the same. In the end I bought the trek as it has a better colour frmae (so sad i know), but saying that I have had my trek nearly nicked or interfered with 3 times and my wife none at all with her rockhopper.
Otherwise see who will give you a better price.
I don't mind what they say... as long as they say its enormous

Cars = Let me know what its like because we need a new car soon, are you planning on using a bike rack with it?

Bikes = I think either will be very good and most mainstream manufacturers compete in that sector so there should be plenty of choice.

I use Thule roofbars on the 147 we have now, so what ever Alfa we get next will need to take a set of roofbars, don't need a big car, so it'll be a Giulietta or Mito. The 159 is too big and Brera doesn't take roofbars

The car next week is a hire car for a three day business trip.

I think the Alfisti have hijacked this thread!

I'm usually a Trek man but the Rockhopper is WAY superior to the Trek hardtails, there is something just a bit wrong with the geometry of the Treks
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

The Giulietta was brilliant, quieter, faster and more economical than the 147 we have now.

Well built and comfortable for 900 miles. 8)
