Hi All,

I'm going to treat myself to an upgrade from a hard tail to a full suspension.

Just after your thoughts and advice as to what you think is the better bike and value for money, I'm currently edging toward the cube. Thoughts on forks please?

I personally prefer the suspension design of the Lapierre Spicy. It's a more reliably and, I find, more comfortable system. Lapierre is also a more boutique brand so people will be ogling your bike more.

I'd take a look at the equivalent Trek, Specialized, Giant, etc. You can usually get a better deal from the larger companies. And you usually get a better component spec for the price.

I have the stereo and love it. I am not going to tell you to buy it as you need to see if it is for you. But be aware that if you go in with cash you could probably get the team for a £100 more.

    Cheers

I agree that Lapierre is a more boutique brand but I'm conscious that, thta is what I was paying for, having already owned a Cube hard tail my experience tells me you get a better component spec for the money than the larger brands as you seem to be paying more for the name.

I think Cube have become a lot more established since 4 years ago when I bought my hard tail mind, but the spec still seems pretty decent!

Thanks for all your input fellas!

If you can stretch another £100 look at a Trek Fuel EX 7 (that said, my LBS knocked £200 off my EX9 for cash so the EX7 could well be in budget)

  • If you're looking at getting a Lappy have a look at sunsetmtb.co.uk of whatever it was advertised in the mag, they're doing a 10% off thing at the moment which at the price range makes big money (enough to get a years insurance and a damn good lock I'd say).

Do bike shops give you a discount if you give 'em notes instead of a credit card then? I'm a student looking at getting a new rig in a couple of months when I graduate so any advice on that level would be great. I really want a Zesty but possibly a Trek.

Big companys give better spec I find. Just buying power, innit.

The price of the Zesty's has shot up more than it has for most other manufacturers this year. Compare tot the 2010 prices and the spec list, and you'll struggle to find the words 'good value' anywhere tbh. They look amazing, and the ride is amazing according to my friend who has the 514. I think there is a lot of well deserved hype, but for me I couldn't justify the money for the level of kit. I wanted the 314, but found a Cube Stereo R1 2010 for the same money, and it has XTR all over it, Fox Talas, RP23 etc etc, and rides like a dream.

The 214 has a bit of SLX and a bit of Alivio in the drivetrain, and quick release front and back. The Stereo Pro is more SLX/XT, and you get a more versatile fork which is also 15mm bolt-thru.

I think the point is that, at any price point, Cube are competitive and Lapierre just aren't. If you've got the beans though, just get whatever you'll be happiest with! 8)

P.S. maybe you can pick up last year's 214 still:

The Cube is definitely looking like the winner, I have been talking to my mate today and we're going to get them both on demo from our local dealer and take them for a raz at Cwmcarn, I think that'll be the decider!!!

I require a 46 size and only 42 left of last years model on cyclestore, thanks anyway.

The spicy 316 get a very good review in the latest MBUK. There's a cube Fritz in the group test that doesn't fair so well.
