hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone new of a route planning website that could give the 'easiest' route from A to B?? I know there's plenty out there that will tell you how far and elevation etc, but I'm trying to plan training routes in the build up for a century and Devons terrain is very variable, one 20mile loop might feel harder than a different 40mile loop...

cheers, O

This Cycle Route Planner aims to select easier hills if you select "quietest" route. You can download the routes to GPS. It may / may not work nin your area.

I'd suggest your best bet would be either to get the relevant OS 1:50,000 maps, or a software version of the same (e.g. Mapyx Quo) and learn to 'read' them with a cyclist's eye. Once you've planned and tried out a few routes you'll start to get a feel for what challenges each route will have. The most important thing to be able to visualise, if you're looking for easier routes, is the contours.

But, if you're in Devon, there aren't any flat routes, unless you stay in a very restricted area. Anyway, all the hills are good training. If you can ride 100 miles in Devon, you'll be able to ride 100 miles just about anywhere. There are 8000 miles of roads in Devon, so you won't run out of new ones to explore.

Try Bike Hike - you can plot routes on and off road and calculate mileages and elevations etc. http://www.bikehike.co.uk/
I use it all the time.

I've been using www.mapmyride.com has a really good interactive map tool that will plan a direct route for you but is then really easy to go into and edit
