Shimano 105/tiagra compatibility

I just received a Trek 1.2 from a friend, problem is that it has no shifters.
Right now it has tiagra 4500 front and rear mechs, and a nine speed cassette.
Would it be possible for me to use a set of Shimano 105 5700 shifters without having to change the other components?
Also, if I changed the cassette to a 10 speed, would the tiagra rear mech work in all 10 gears, or just be able to change between 9 gears?
Thanks for the help.

should work fine as a 10 speed cassette is actually narrower than a 9sp. You will need to change the cassette tho. Why don't you just go for tiagra shifters ? I have 105 on one bike and Tiagra on another, there's little difference.0

Great, thanks for the info! I just happened to have a set of 105 shifters laying around from an old written off bike and had no other bikes with Shimano components until now. If I were going to buy them just for this bike I would just get some tiagra shifters as you mentioned.0 -
You can put on new 5700 shifters, if you also change the cassette and chain to 10-speed.0
