i think this is one of my favourite quotes:

"Although fatalities are recorded, there is no way of measuring how many people have been intimidated or left feeling vulnerable by irresponsible cycling,"

On the other hand, rhetoric aside, anyone have a problem with an idiot on a bike who causes injury being done for it?

So a cyclist could knock and old women over sending her flying, breaking bones etc. without stopping ? I'm sorry but thats nonsense, how could you stay on a bike flying into someone ?

    Daily Fail.

    Using short simple words .

If you read what you wrote carefully you will see that you wrote that the elderly lady went flying, not the bike.

  • the daily mail article is bad, but its hardly a reason to say all cyclists are bad. its just the same as hit and run, and whilst they are obviously horrific, no one says everyone stop driving when it happens. just the daily mail being dickheads again. stupid paper.

and yes, punishment for cyclists who ride like morons is a good idea, but the point made about riding defensively is a very good one, i ride in the middle of the road once there is a gap if i am turning right, rather than moving across as i get to the juntion, so sometimes im riding in the middle for maybe 150 yards before a turning, car drivers prob think im a tosser, but i dont wanna be smeared across some douchebags audi cause i turned at the last minuite.

oh and i do drive as well, so i see it from both sides, i think some car drivers should be made to go out on a bike around a busy street for half an hour, see if that changes their attitude towards cyclists.

You're saying you could hit someone at pace without falling off ?

Granted I've hit trees and the like but a person ?

    to add:

not that I think that knocking an old person over is good, it's clearly terrible... but it's written from a frankly stupid, prejudice and sensationalist angle.

  • People always go on about cyclists on pavements yet where I live, the streets are full of cars who park on the pavements.

    All seems very bizarre.

    *climbs on high horse*

I’m going to throw this one back at the narrow minded and ‘cheapskate’ local authorities. To fulfil their quota of building cycle paths, to address green transport and environmental targets, they are making many foot paths into ‘dual use’ (or should that be duel use…) routes.

These can be used by both pedestrians and cyclists. All this has done is remove the ‘problem’ (which is how cyclists are described by motorists) from the road to the pavement. The cyclist, instead of having to deal with a muppet behind the wheel, now has to deal with a muppet in charge of a push-chair, shopping cart, etc etc.

So what we have now is a situation where instead of hearing all about those ‘dangerous commuter cyclists weaving through the traffic’ (again, this would be Mr BMW driver who’s ego has just been punctured by a cyclist having the audacity to overtake his pride and joy in central London) to ‘dangerous cyclist causing mayhem on the footpaths’.

Solution – BUILD MORE BIKE PATHS!

What we (the cycling community) need are separate, specific paths and routes that aren’t shared with other users.

I shall get off my high horse now and go and have a quiet lie down somewhere…
