hi

Looking at replacing my ageing Met with something new, but wondering is there a decent helmet for road use that offers good protection yet is relatively small? Got a Specialized helmet for my mountain bike, and it's a great helmet but looks huuuge on my head!

Looking at the Alpina Pheos, but cant find any online stockists, so any other ideas?

Check out Giro, Bell, Lazer or Laser can't remember how they spell it Catlook and my personal favourite as i own two of these is a Scott Fuga helmet. Lightweight, small, great protection and for a £100 helmet i got mine for £30 so that was the deal breaker for me! Keep looking keep trying them on and seeing what looks good/allows you to wear sunglasses comfortably.

Just one word of advice...... Colour, get something visable, I have gone for white as it ticks that box and goes with a variety of kit.

Lazer, Giro, Bell - all good. Main thing is to buy one that fits, so best to go and try a few before buying.

Alpina helmets are very nice but very rare to get hold of, was looking for an Ekip a couple of years ago but gave up in the end.

Looking at their stockist list, the retailer list has grown considerably, the Pheos Team looks great! I have a Giro Ionos which is fine but might take a look at the Alpina.

Specialized 2D or 3D, very nice, light with excellent ventilation, good retention system, not cheap but do try one before you buy as they are v comfortable and look the dogs, must be white.

Worth looking at the womens range of helmets. They are usually smaller overall so don't look so large on the head. Maybe even youths helmets, but they tend to be horrible looking with weird kids patterns.

I replaced my giro atmos with giro prolite and was very impressed at the weight reduction and better comfort. Not as well vented in hot weather but the weight made a huge difference to me - probably bad posture but pain across back of neck is much reduced since making the switch. There is meant to be a hybrid model being launched this year which combines the weight advantage of the prolite with the maxed out venting of the Ionis. If not too expensive this could be the perfect compromise for my needs.

Maybe you should have looked for an Ekoi instead? :-) http://www.ekoi.fr/

No big sponsorships in the peloton (Big Mat) but i've seen them in France on sportives and they look sharp.

Back to the OP - depends on your head shape - Bells are rounder, Giros more oval. Giros fit me well so I stick with them and have had 4 or 5 after moving from 2 Mets. Mets fit well but my noggin is too large - they top out at 58cms or so and I need 61cms. Mainly c/c I like to fit a cycling cap underneath for 3 seasons of the year.

I have the same issue as the op, most helmets I've tried look like a I have a mahoosive mushroom for a head. I currently have a Spesh 2D but also tried a couple of the higher-end Bells and Giros and they look just as bad. Looking at the pros though they all seem to fit much more neatly, surely they can't all have small heads?

Will probably try a couple of the Kask range and maybe the Uvex but would be good to know if anyone had a Spesh 2d and looked like a mushroom and switched to something else that looks a lot neater. And yeah it's all about the looks :p

My head is quite thin and long so I look like a c##k in a £40 helmet and a £140 helmet.

I think there is a news item here about that lid. It does indeed combine the lightness of the Prolight with the comfort of the Ionos. It does this by combining the price of the Prolight with the price of the Ionos  (about 250 Euro irrc)

I'll skip that one but I might go back to Edinburgh cycles and try out a Prolight again. All the top range lids seem surprisingly heavy but I think the Ionos did seem more comfy than the Prolight. Besides, once on your head you don't notice the lid much anyway...

Most helmets are designed to make your head to look like a mushroom! It's so they can get the necessary padding in there. (These types of helmets look better if you wear glasses I've found).

Agree with Jacques - Ekoi are small and cool. Hard to find though!

Just bought a Giro ProLight. Lightest thing I've ever worn and small than the Ionos. Still somewhat mushroom-like though.
  • Obviously it's a personal thing, but recently I've had a Giro Atmos which I quite liked, light, comfortable and did its job when I came off my bike !

Then had a Uvex FP1,it was ok but not the most comfy.

I've now got a Kask K10 which I'm very pleased with light, comfortable and easy to adjust.

    Well worth a look !

I've got a long, thin head, and have found that every Giro or Bell that I've ever tried on has looked completely ridiculuous.

I've just bought a Lazer Genesis, however, and it's the best fitting helmet for my head shape that I've found (see review here) - it still sticks out a bit (and as Pokerface says, it needs to to do its job) but it is far less mushroomy than anything else I've tried.

This is not me, but gives you an idea of the fit: 122235519_6fd8b8a60e_m.jpg
  • I have a LAS Squalo. It's a really comfortable lid and I hink looks awesome and also different to the rest of the usual suspects. It also does it's job right as I found out after a crash causing my head to hit the tarmac resulting in a very crushed helmet and perfectly undamaged head. It's so good I've got a new one via their crash replacement service.
