Sidewall tyre damage

Just inspected my tyres and found a cut in the sidewall of the front tyre. The threads are not visible but it is about 5mm long. My intuition is that side wall damage is more serious than that on the crown of the tyre. Anyone have any guidelines for sidewall damage tyre replacement? just curious, I plan to replace it ASAP.

Thanks
Nick

If it hasn't cut through the carcass or the reinforcing threads it should be OK, try super-glue to close the cut to stop debris getting in.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

You've kinda answered your own question. Replace ASAP is my advice.
  • Thanks Monty Dog, thats what I had decided to do until the replacement turned up.

And that should have been the end of it, except having filled the cut with super glue I had one of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" moments and decided to spread the glue out a bit to smooth it off.... with my finger.

Cut in side wall now filled with a mix of super glue and forcibly removed human tissue.

    Doh!

don't risk it, is my advice :(

didn't realise I had a sidewall cut after hitting a pothole, it blew out on me at 20mph
    and I broke my clavicle.

i was sat in the office yesterday and something went bang behind me, after I had got up thinking it was a sniper i noticed my tyre had burst. Close inspection revealed sidewall wear, and a similar ammount on the front, if this had been 20 minutes earlier I could hav been hurtling down the steep dual carriageway.

Definitely replace, and quick, the sidewall is not as resilient and a blowout could be catastrophic.

If you want to reinforce it a bit, get a strip of cut-up toothpaste tube and wrap it round the inner tube at the damaged part of the tyre. It'll last longer than the tyre will.

  • I replaced it, I'd had 4000 miles out of it and the replacement cost £16 which helps. I'll put the old one on the turbo wheel when the time is right and it can do no harm if it fails.

When I took the old one off I could see the damaged area on the inside of the tyre, not a cut but it looked different, slightly wrinked, from the area around it. I hadn't expected that.

Thanks for the follow ups, lesson learnt.
