Towards the end of a longish ride a couple of days ago I noticed that my freewheel sounded much louder than normal. Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea what the course could be?

Needs lubrication - screaming freewheel / freehub is usually an indication of one that's about to kiss this mortal coil
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

When i say louder I meant that the usual subtle clicking noise is louder. It's still a clicking sound though. Is that what you mean by "screaming"?
  • It could be warming up as you ride, thinning the grease inside. Is it the same now it's settled? Is there any play in your cassette?

You can flush and re-grease them, other than that there's not much else practical that you can do - chances are it's fine though.
