Ticking noise from rear wheel

It's annoying when I think of things like this at this time of night :?

But I realised my rear wheel was making that ticking noise (the one you kind of associate with a bike even though they usually shouldn't make it) when freewheeling. I can't remember if it's always made the noise or if it's a new thing though so wonder if anyone can tell me.

The bike is a Giant SCR 3 2007 (linky)

1 - it has always made that noise because it is the freehub

2 - someone has put a bomb in your rear wheel

I would go with option 1 unless you have upset anyone lately.

The only real way to find out if it is a problem is to take it to a lbs and ask someone who can actually hear the noise because no-one on here can actually hear it.

Turn bike over and spin wheel to and fro. Rotate a bit and do same all way round. May hear more of a tinkle than a tick, could be loose bit inside closed section of the aluminium of the rim. If so take wheel back for a new one.
The Wife complained for months about the empty pot of bike oil on the hall stand; so I replaced it with a full one.
  • Can you wobble the wheel from side to side? Might indicate loose bearings

The wheel came with the bike. But I'll try what you suggested.

I'm probably worrying about something that's always been there. But I'll be doing some longer rides again so am getting panicy about breaking my bike through lack of care.
  • Have you got a playing card held on the seat stay with a peg? That might explain it.

Do you have a spoke magnet on the rear wheel ? It could have twisted a bit and is now catching on the sensor.
