Road tyres

I'm doing a lot of riding on the roads at the moment, need advice on buying road tyres for my mountain bike... i'm a newbie to mountain biking so is it best to just try some cheap slicks or semi slicks?
Recommendations for tyres would be greatly appreciated as i don't want to throw money at tyres that won't last 5 minutes. also is it best to get slimmer (1.50 - 1.75) rather than than wider ones (1.95 or whatever other sizes they do larger than this) as my current nobbly tyres are 2.25?
Thanks
Marty

Slimmer ones are lighter, but offer less comfort - so a trade off.
17mm rims will take a 1 inch tyre, but that maybe too extreme. 1.5-1.75 is a good compromise for many.0 -
Michellin make a nice "City" tyre @ 1.95
CST Make a good "Corporal Reflective" @ 1.90
There's next to no noticeable difference between them apart from the tread and they're both cheap, i looked at both when i changed over to road tyres for a while.
I imagine you'll need to change your inner tubes too.0 -
I have these on mine for tarmac, fast rolling and look like big BMX tyres
Excellent value too, 73% off!!!!!

thanks, i've just ordered some 1.95 schwalbe city slicks £20 for 2 and will be ordering some new tubes to go with them, hopefully they'll be a very noticable improvement rolling on tarmac compared to my nobbly tyres0
