Steerer too big for my crown race??

So I'm installing a FSA integrated headset, very straightforward, except that the split crown race expands so much to fit the steerer, that the bearing cartridge can't then sit down on top...

Measured the steerer OD at the base = 30mm, race ID when fitted inside the bearings is the 28.6mm I was expecting.

Steerer is carbon, can it be rubbed down to fit? Or am I missing a trick?

Might this have to go to the shop after all?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

    30mm is the standard for a 1 1/8 headset.

are you fitting the crown race? or the top centering wedge?

I think you might have the wrong headset. Look for the drawings of the headsets on the FSA website.

unlikely as 28.6 is the steerer diameter. wrong parts in the wrong place or wrong parts supplied.

    the former is normal.
