Which Bikes should I demo?

I ride a Kona Kikapu 2005 with key upgrades (fork, brakes wheels & tyres). I mainly ride trail centres. My riding has progressed over the last few years and I've been leaning towards the gravity side of things and doing more drops & jumps etc. I'm at a point where I'm thinking of entering an enduro race this year with some friends but want to train and ride on the right sort of bike.
The only drawback is I'm going to have to sell my kona to upgrade so I need a bike that can do everything (albeit a compromise)! I've been looking at 140mm bikes (not sure how much difference/benefit 120mm bikes will offer over the kona) and 140mm seems to me to be the best compromise between a trail bike and the mountain machines - am I right or have I missed the point?
Finally, my LBS stocks specialised, orange, trek, lapierre and some other brands. Budget is approx. 1500-2000 quid and I plan to demo an Orange 5, Lapierre zesty & stumpjumper - not sure which trek I should try - any suggestions and any other bikes that should be on my list?
Thanks in advance!
