Tool is highly recommended as a jacket for cold weather (below about 8 deg) - a bit too warm in the sunshine (if we ever get any).
I bought Gore to replace an old Gore jacket that has been brilliant but is now showing wear.
Sounds like we are a similar height - I am about 7lb lighter. I bought the extra large and it fits fine for length and sleeve length. It is quite roomy around chest and waist which I expected and dont mind. I have found from experience that the Large is more snug but a bit short (pockets too high up the back). I think that like me you could get away with either depending what type of fit you like.

I've got a Phantom and they're great. Waterproof enough, pretty warm (but no thermal lining), breathable, and very well made. I think they're more road orientated than the other two, plus they've got removable sleeves which makes them more versatile.

I am a bit taller than you, 6ft3 and about 80 kg, and the large fits perfectly, Gore aren't as tight size-wise as some European brands.

I assume you've found a better price than the $169?

Forgot to mention, I also recently bought a Phantom for my brother - have tried it on but not used it. In comparison with the Tool, it is very slightly thinner material and has a smoother, less velour type lining. I would guess it is not quite as warm (but still a warm jacket). On the plus side it has detachable sleeves and the zips can be opened a bit for ventilation. On the minus side it has no chest pocket. Looks like a great jacket, possibly not quite as warm though not much in it.

+1 for the Phantom. Fantastic jacket.

Nice and warm in the cold with a thermal underneath and great with the sleeves off as a jersey when it gets a bit warmer. The sleeves fit easily in the back pocket too so you can chop and change whilst you're out and about

If you like the Phantom then also look at the Oxygen SO. Very similar but a more roadie cut and no zip-off arms.

I bought the Tool last December and can say it is very very warm and comfortable. I wear it with a very thin base layer just so I do not have to wash it after every ride. Although a great jacket I would not recommend it now as it will be too warm in a week or so, but get one for next winter.
Wife has an Oxygen (in my size) which is also very comfortable, but more Road fit, and I might try this next time out.
Looking to buy a Xenon long sleeve jersey for the comming months, then back to the "cheap" short sleeved Ozon for summer (unless I can afford a short sleeve Xenon)

Size wise I am 6'-4" but with long body, 46" chest, 107kg, and 120" beer belly :D and the XL is a perfect fit. You would probably get away with L but why not try a Gore for size in your local shop before ordering

so i guess the large would be correct for me.

some people told me that the large may be a bit short in the back and in the front and not fully covering my lower back when on bike.

should i go for the xlarge or will it be too big in the arms and waist?

    +1 Phanton.
My first winter jacket and very comfortable and warm. Excellent wind proofing even with
the zips on the removable sleeves. Only thing have found is the sleeves tend to twist so the reflective banding ends up on the inside arms. Think this has been mentioned before.

I think this is intentional. When riding your inner forearm faces forward due to the way you normally hold the hoods so the reflective stripe ends up in the right place...

you could try here if you can find the right size

I got the Oxygen for £56
  • The gore sizing chart would suggets that large is <39.5inches and the sizing of their recently purchsed xenon gilet would support this. (A large fits me perfectly with a 39 inch chest) - the medium I had to send back as it would only just do up.

The gore chart (as in on their website) is completely different to the one on the evans site

i'm afraid that the large may be too short in the back when on bike...

    what do you think?

The only way you will know for sure is to try one on.
Try one out at your local store, and then order online if it is cheaper

when yoy say short, you mean that it won't cover the lower back?
  • I've got a Phantom 2 and its one of the best pieces of kit I've used. Its warm enough in winter with a few layers underneath, its waterproof enough for pretty much everything except pouring rain and with zip off sleeves it works really well as a thick jersey in the spring. Cleans up great in the washing machine too. I think the best part is its versatility and the only other kit I need is a jersey for the summer and some arm warmers.

    The fits really good too.
