can probably call it hand made if a man lifts if from the assembly line.
hands can be poor welders compared to automated robots.

Does it make any difference? Well if you buy a new Taiwan CAAD10 frame, I'll swap my CAAD9 "hand built in USA" frame for it

surely the idea of "handbuilt in USA" would put more people off buying it than sell bikes

If you really want to laugh at "hand built in USA" then look no further then the Fender Custom Guitar shop relic models. For approx £2000 you can buy a hand built guitar made in it's California custom shop. For a further £1000 you can then let them hit your brand new guitar with a hammer, burn the paint and lacquer off, spray acid on the chrome making it pit, put dirty yellow rotten plastic on and call it a "Custom shop relic".

That badge went a long way to the cannondale appeal.

The weld finish on my old USA CAAD9 was exquisite.

to look at maybe, they just sand it smooth-not possible to weld that finish. a robot has better control.

Since Cannondale restructured since their Chapter 11 filing, a significant proportion of their production now comes from the far east. The frames are still be welded by hand, just Chinese ones. Double-pass welding and finishing like on the older models was purely aesthetic - it doesn't actually make it any stronger, but does add to the cost.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
